20 10 2010

Today is another rare day in terms of date and also the very first World Statistics Day ever "celebrated" and I am pleased to note that South Africa is one of the many countries incorporated into this International Event.
I love stats, find them fascinating and useful but must admit I have had my doubts as to the trustworthiness of stats from time to time. Today the global statistical system aims to improve awareness and trust of these official public stats.
I say ....... cool!

October really is a great month for interesting dates and just two Sundays ago the date was 10/10/10 and if you were awake and astute it would have been even more cool at 10:10am on 10/10/10.
We all contribute to stats all the time and probably when we least expect it. Stats conjure thoughts of elections, population, finance, divorce rates etc but stats are all around us as we make the most simplest of choices to buy low fat milk rather than full cream, to holiday locally instead of abroad this year, to buy a DVD rather than a movie ticket etc etc etc.
Stats in my humble opinion form the backbone of trend prediction, progression and decision.
Just look at the website "Hello Peter". Thousands upon thousands of people now revert to this website before making decisions on where to purchase or which services to procure. They go to the company name, click and a wealth of stats become available to them including ratio of good to bad reports, actual reports from the public with their exact account of their experience and the reasons for their good or bad report as well as whether the company responds or not and if so how quickly etc.
This is just one example of how the general public now manage and observe stats. It is a sign that humans are beginning to rely on and trust in stats more and more and by so doing they empower themselves to a greater extent.
Some say stats are a science and others say they are an art. I err on the side of science with an arty flair :)

Where are you today, what are you doing, what is important to you, what are your dreams today, how do you feel today, have you something awesome planned today?
