New Year Eve Baby and party plans

Becca chose her birth date to be new years eve. Would I have picked that as a preferred date on which to have my child born? No. Why? Because it is a really tricky day in terms of keeping sacred her birth date and the celebration thereof and not allowing the lines to be crossed with a new years eve party. We have started asking around to see who is in town on 31 December this year so that we can get an idea of numbers. This is turn will dictate food as there is no point doing a spit if there are 4 people type thing and if there are 30 [Andrew has a big family] then price wise we may just do boerie rolls! It also helps us decide whether we have the party at home or may need to go somewhere. Really the thought of spending new years day tidying a house that has had 40 people through it does not appeal to me.
Sadly, some of our most favourite people who really love Becca are out of town on the day and those who are in town however appear to be looking for a place to party for new years eve and I am quite concerned that when we mention that invites will follow soon for Becca's first birthday the overwhelming response has been "cool wild party at the Garratts" or "great, we'll be there, new years eve plans sorted!"
Now Andrew and I may have partied hard in our time BUT we have never ever been big on new years eve parties preferring instead to just celebrate quietly with family or quite frankly just see the new year in at home just the two of us. We don't get the need to go wild, get horribly drunk, kiss or be kissed by strangers and be in the path of people who seem to think testing the bounds of danger are a good idea on this particular day.
For this reason I find the assumption that a wild party at us will ensue quite annoying!

We are loathe to change Becca's first birthday party to another day either in an attempt to avoid this crossing of lines. It is the day she was born. She chose this day. It is her birthday and her first birthday at that. We will celebrate on the day. We plan to have a low key casual gathering with family and one or two close friends to celebrate this. There will be champagne of course but it will be there to celebrate Becca and not for the purpose of getting drunk and having an adult party!

So many people say the first birthday is for the adults and NOT the child whose birthday it is. I say pah to that! While we understand that Becca will not even fully appreciate what is going on or what it is about, to us, it is ALL about her.

These things do have a way of working themselves out and I am determined not to get my knickers in a knot about it all. Im going to focus instead on a cake to bake for her. I barely cook nevermind bake and I remember in standard 6 when Home Economics was compulsory for all girls for that year, none of my friends wanted to partner with me as I would always ruin the icing by adding too much water, forget a vital ingredient, get over zealous with the rolling pin, burn things, forget to prick things etc etc.
With this in mind, if I pull off a successful birthday cake for Bex, it will be a very very very good thing ;)

It sounds like a perfect opportunity to do a daytime party for the kids followed by a night time bash for the adults. Perfect! And believe me when she's a teenager she will love the fact that she's born on New Years Eve.
